Gian Piero Gasperini emphasized that his Roma squad will draw confidence from their 2-2 stalemate with Serie A champions Inter, despite squandering a two-goal advantage at the Stadio Olimpico.
In a showdown between the two teams with perfect records, Roma initially took control into halftime thanks to Manu Kone’s two goals.
However, Inter struck back just 51 seconds into the second half with a goal from Lautaro Martinez, who later netted the equalizer in the final 11 minutes.
Throughout the match, Inter created several opportunities, with Alessandro Bastoni hitting the crossbar and Marcus Thuram narrowly missing the goal with a backheel flick.
This draw marked the first time since January 2021 that Roma and Inter have finished level in Serie A, keeping both teams close as they head into the upcoming international break.
Post-match, Gasperini sought to highlight the positives, noting that for the first time since the 2014-15 season, Roma have remained unbeaten in their first five league matches.
Additionally, Roma set a new record by scoring at least two goals in ten consecutive Serie A fixtures, making Gasperini hopeful for the team’s future.
“I think we were evenly matched; either team could have taken the victory at various moments,” Gasperini shared with DAZN Italia, as reported by Football Italia. “The early goal in the second half gave a boost to a strong Inter team, who are always dangerous, though we had our chances as well.”
Gasperini, who has been hesitant to declare Roma as title contenders, acknowledged that the team’s performance against Inter demonstrates their ability to compete with top clubs in Serie A.
“There is always room for improvement,” he remarked. “We should celebrate our advancements and the quality we’ve brought to these matches, beyond just physical fitness and enthusiasm.”
Roma had not enjoyed a two-goal lead against Inter in Serie A since their 3-1 victory at the San Siro in February 2017, and they appeared to tire as the match progressed.
With only Cagliari (two) conceding fewer goals than Roma (three) in the league this season, it’s notable that two of Roma’s goals conceded have come early in the second half of their matches.
“It’s likely not a coincidence, as the manner in which we conceded was too naive and almost overconfident,” Gasperini stated. “We were in control and could have caused more damage in the second half.”
“Still, even with some players facing challenges, Roma pressed to secure a win and had a golden opportunity for 3-1, with Malen’s shot hitting the goalkeeper. We never held back against a strong opponent, both technically and physically.”
