Serena Williams’ return to tennis hasn’t resulted in many wins. Though she’s had some doubles success, Williams’ big return to singles ended in disappointment, as she was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon.
Despite that, Williams had a choice to return to singles play at the 2026 US Open, but opted to pass on that opportunity. Instead, she’ll play doubles with her sister Venus at the event.

But that doesn’t mean Serena, 44, has completely given up on her singles career. She told GMA on Monday that she feels like she needs to return to the court for at least one more singles match.
When asked, Williams said, “I’ll probably play again. I have to. After some of those returns, I think I need to play.”
She added, “I think I will. But this isn’t something permanent, obviously. I just really want my children to see me play at a different age.”
Williams, arguably the best tennis player of her era, shocked many in June when she announced she would return to tennis after multiple years away. At the time, no one was clear how long Williams intended to keep playing, though some speculated she would try and make at least one more Grand Slam run before calling it quits.

She did get that opportunity at Wimbledon, though lost in the first round to Maya Joint. Williams suffered a knee injury during that match, which prevented her from taking the court for a doubles match with her sister.
With the pair playing doubles at the 2026 US Open, there were questions over whether Williams would continue to play after taking the court with her sister one more time.
Based on her comments Monday, Williams is still hoping for one more miraculous run before deciding to officially move on from tennis.
