Paul Trevathan, the KTM crew chief from Murcia, remarks that Marc Marquez has “never had anyone like Acosta alongside him.” Trevathan has been working with Pedro Acosta since the young Spaniard’s MotoGP debut in 2024, following his Moto2 championship win.
Although it hasn’t been finalized who Acosta and Trevathan will team up with next season—given Acosta’s move to Ducati and incoming riders Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio joining the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team—it’s anticipated that Acosta will work with one of Ducati’s current crew chiefs, probably Christian Gabbarini, who is currently paired with Francesco Bagnaia.
Over the last two and a half seasons, Trevathan and Acosta have developed a strong relationship as Acosta emerged as one of MotoGP’s most competitive and occasionally frustrated riders. Much of that frustration dissipated recently when Acosta secured his first premier class victory in Austria—a significant milestone, especially as he prepares to become Marc Marquez’s teammate.
The last KTM rider to become Marquez’s teammate was Pol Espargaro, who never won a race before returning to KTM after two seasons without a victory. With Acosta, however, the outlook feels different, particularly after his breakthrough win, and Trevathan believes he will present a challenge to Marquez unlike anything the Ducati rider has faced before.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the Austrian GP, Trevathan called Acosta’s upcoming role alongside Marquez “a massive challenge.” He highlighted Marquez’s ability to get under his teammates’ skin and influence those around him but noted that the nine-time champion has never faced someone like Acosta. Trevathan shared that Acosta’s mentality isn’t solely focused on winning or losing but on giving his best effort: if Marquez beats him on equal machinery, he’ll accept that Marquez is the better rider—but Acosta truly wants to compete.
Trevathan praised Marquez as an incredible champion and rider but insisted that Acosta’s fierce character will bring a new dynamic to the team. “It will be fireworks for you guys, I tell you,” he concluded.
