Sean Strickland narrowly avoided a serious accident with a motor vehicle for the second time recently. On Monday evening, the UFC middleweight champion shared on social media that he had just been involved in a crash while traveling at 60 miles per hour. Covered in dirt and showing signs of bruising, Strickland explained that his friend Chris was driving when the vehicle rolled multiple times, causing Strickland to hit his head on the ground without wearing a helmet.
The following day, Strickland posted footage showing the crash and its immediate aftermath, where Chris is seen driving before losing consciousness after exiting the vehicle. Strickland shared: “I’m in a real bad place. I let my buddy drive. He rolled us going like 60. We rolled like six times. That was from my head hitting the ground going 60. Did not have a helmet on. Idiot. I think I’m gonna lay here and take a nap for a bit. A little shut eye will do me right.”
Despite some visible scrapes and possible bruises, both Strickland and his friend appear to have escaped serious injuries. Strickland later updated fans that they took Chris to the hospital. He added, “I think I’m OK. Chris went a little unconscious for a bit. He’s in the hospital, but he’s gonna be alright. He just went asleep for a little bit.” He also mentioned, “Honestly, the most fun I’ve had in a long time. My wallet’s a little sore, but Rainbet said they’d cover it, so that’s nice. That was the most fun thing I’ve done in a very long time. I hope Chris is OK. I’ve never seen anybody go unconscious before. That was interesting.”
This incident is not Strickland’s first close call with a motorized vehicle. In December 2018, at age 35, he had a serious motorcycle crash when he collided with a van. The accident left him unconscious and hospitalized, with a significant knee injury that required surgery and sidelined him from UFC competition for two years.
Since recovering, Strickland has become a two-time UFC champion. His most recent fight was in May, where he won the middleweight title by defeating former champion Khamzat Chimaev by split decision.
Fan Take: This news is significant for fight fans because it highlights the resilience and mental toughness of Sean Strickland, who continues to push forward despite life-threatening experiences. It also serves as a reminder of the thin line fighters walk outside the octagon, where their health and careers can be impacted by unforeseen events, making their achievements inside the cage even more remarkable.
