Alex Bowman has been given the green light to return to the NASCAR Cup Series. Hendrick Motorsports confirmed on Thursday that Bowman will be back behind the wheel of the No. 48 car at Bristol this Sunday. He had been sidelined for the last four races due to vertigo symptoms.
Bowman expressed relief and excitement about his comeback, stating, “It’s been hard being out of the car, but everyone wanted to make sure I was fully ready before I returned. I feel great and am eager to be at the track with my team and race again.”
His symptoms first forced him out of the March 1 race at Circuit of the Americas, where Myatt Snider took over driving duties. Anthony Alfredo drove in Phoenix, and Justin Allgaier has handled the car for the past three events while Bowman recuperated.
Hendrick Motorsports explained that Bowman earned medical clearance after testing in a street car at a North Carolina road course, practicing pit stops, running simulations, and passing all health checks.

Due to NASCAR’s revised playoff system for 2026, which no longer guarantees a playoff spot to race winners, Bowman’s hopes of making the postseason are slim. The new format advances the top 16 drivers based on points alone, rather than “win-and-in.” Having missed four of the first seven races, Bowman currently sits 144 points behind the 16th-place cutoff.
