LAS VEGAS – While the drama played up well for reality TV, Ilimbek Akylbek insists that it doesn’t reflect real life.
Ahead of Saturday’s bantamweight final of “TUF 34,” which takes place during UFC Fight Night 289 at Meta APEX, Akylbek (10-3) remains unfazed by the trash talk and attention surrounding his opponent, Mehemmedeli Osmanli (12-1).
Speaking through a Russian interpreter to MMA Junkie and other media on Wednesday, Akylbek acknowledged there was some tension at the end of the season. “There was a bit of conflict during sparring, but it’s nothing personal between me and him. I see it purely as a sports matter,” he explained. “Sometimes these things happen during training and sparring. My focus is to settle everything inside the octagon and come out with a win.”
Both fighters were on “Team Bisping” during the reality series, but a clash during training caused a rift. Osmanli accused Akylbek of elbowing him to break free from a submission and even threw down a challenge for a fight.
Now, on Saturday, they finally have that opportunity. Osmanli has already drawn comparisons to outspoken MMA stars like Conor McGregor, but Akylbek isn’t fazed by the hype, saying he doesn’t even consider Osmanli the toughest opponent he’s faced.
“I wouldn’t say he’s my most difficult opponent,” Akylbek said. “Maybe people highlight him because he’s tall and a southpaw, making him a bit awkward. But I treat every opponent with the same respect, and every fight is crucial. My job is to walk out there and secure the victory no matter what.”
