The exclusive 40-40 club has welcomed a new member.
During the top of the first inning in Thursday’s home game against the Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs standout center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong stole second base, securing his place as only the seventh player in MLB history to achieve a 40-40 season — hitting at least 40 home runs and stealing 40 bases.
Crow-Armstrong marks the third player to reach this milestone in the past four years, joining Los Angeles ‘ two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani (2024), who also boasts the first-ever 50-50 season, and Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. (2023). He is additionally just the fourth player in the 21st century to hit the 40-40 mark; Alfonso Soriano accomplished the feat with the Washington Nationals in 2006.
At 24 years old, Crow-Armstrong has already earned a Gold Glove in 2025 and been selected as an All-Star the past two seasons. Entering Thursday’s game, he led the National League with 45 home runs, 119 runs scored, a .577 slugging percentage, a .949 OPS, an OPS+ of 157, and 9.8 wins above replacement (WAR).
He also came into the day with 107 RBIs and a .280/.373/.577 batting line, while contributing 16 defensive runs saved in center field. His 9.8 WAR ties the Cubs’ Hall of Famer Ron Santo (1967) for the fourth-highest single-season WAR ever recorded by a player in Chicago’s history.
The Cubs acquired Crow-Armstrong from the New York Mets during the 2021 trade deadline, as part of the deal that sent Javier Báez to New York.
Currently, Crow-Armstrong and the Cubs hold the No. 2 wild-card seed in the National League with an 87-71 record.
