Nick Bosa suffered a calf strain at Thursday’s practice and is expected to be out for several weeks, ESPN reported Friday. The 49ers have not yet decided whether to place him on injured reserve.
Through San Francisco’s first two games this season Bosa — a five-time Pro Bowler — has totaled seven combined tackles. The 49ers are 2-0 after beating the Los Angeles Rams in Australia (27-7) and the Miami Dolphins at Levi’s Stadium (35-13). San Francisco hosts NFC West foe Arizona in Week 3 (Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET on FOX).
Injuries have followed Bosa throughout his NFL career. This calf issue comes after his 2025 season was cut short in Week 3 by a torn ACL. He also missed three games the year before with a hip problem, suffered a torn ACL two games into the 2020 season, and played just three games in his final year at Ohio State (2018) because of a core muscle injury. Early in his 2019 rookie year he also battled through an ankle issue.
When healthy, Bosa — the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft — is one of the game’s premier pass rushers. He led the NFL with 18.5 sacks in 2022 and earned All-Pro honors as well as Defensive Player of the Year. In 2021 he recorded 15.5 sacks and four forced fumbles during the regular season and added four more sacks in the playoffs. Bosa was the 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year after posting nine sacks and 47 combined tackles in the regular season and four postseason sacks. He ranks fifth in 49ers history with 64.5 sacks and is tied for seventh in franchise history with 13 forced fumbles.
Fan take: Bosa’s availability matters because his absence would significantly weaken San Francisco’s pass rush and could alter the team’s Super Bowl window. Beyond one team, recurring injuries to an elite defender like Bosa underscore how durability and depth shape roster decisions across the NFL.
