Drew McIntyre has returned to the ring, at least for training purposes. On Friday, the former Undisputed WWE Champion shared a short clip on X showing himself running the ropes, captioning it simply with “Reps.”
McIntyre’s last match was on April 18, when he was defeated by Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match during Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. That bout concluded an intense first half of his year. Earlier in January, McIntyre captured the Undisputed WWE Championship by defeating Cody Rhodes in a brutal Three Stages of Hell match in Berlin. The victory saw him escape the cage after Fatu intervened and attacked both competitors. Rhodes reclaimed the title on the March 6 episode of SmackDown, after General Manager Nick Aldis scheduled a rematch due to McIntyre costing Rhodes a chance to compete at the Elimination Chamber. McIntyre’s feud with Fatu was ongoing, with Fatu blaming McIntyre for a backstage attack in October 2025 that sidelined him from television for months—a claim McIntyre denied.
Since stepping away from wrestling, McIntyre has focused on film projects. According to WrestleTalk, he completed filming his role in the Highlander reboot featuring Henry Cavill by June, and then went on to star in The Last Druid, an action movie with Russell Crowe filmed in Spain. Fightful reports both films are slated for release in 2027.
In August, PWInsider Elite revealed that McIntyre returned to the U.S. after finishing his shoots but had not yet been incorporated back into WWE storylines. However, he has been involved in other WWE projects, including taking on a leading acting role.
Recently, Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp shared that he encountered McIntyre at a Pro Wrestling Symphony event in Nashville. McIntyre expressed how much he missed wrestling and wished he could have participated in a South American tour, which he enjoyed in the past. Although he’s been off wrestling for a longer stretch than usual, he has stayed active in the ring, focusing on joint health and conditioning. No return date was provided.
This activity sparks speculation about McIntyre possibly returning for Money in the Bank on October 10 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. WWE has yet to confirm when he’ll come back.
The Money in the Bank briefcase holds significance for McIntyre. He won the men’s ladder match at Money in the Bank 2024 in Toronto and attempted to cash in the same night during Damian Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins. However, CM Punk interrupted with a steel chair and title belt, allowing Priest to pin McIntyre and retain.
So far, four wrestlers are confirmed qualifiers for this year’s men’s ladder match: Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, United States Champion Trick Williams, and Penta. On the September 25 SmackDown in Indianapolis, Williams will defend his U.S. title against Baron Corbin in a Steel Cage match, while CM Punk, Gunther, and Finn Bálor will compete in a triple threat for another spot in the ladder match.
