Pete DeBoer’s Decision to Pull Jake Oettinger in Crucial Elimination Game Sparks Backlash

The Dallas Stars were defeated 6-3 by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, with Jake Oettinger benched early by coach Pete DeBoer, who chose to replace him with backup Casey DeSmith. Despite Oettinger not being directly responsible for the goals, DeBoer pulled him citing a need to spark the team and considering Oettinger’s poor playoff history against Edmonton. DeBoer pointed out that Oettinger had lost six of seven playoff games versus the Oilers and conceded two quick goals in the elimination game, prompting the switch.

DeSmith came in but allowed a third goal on a soft shot, while two later goals he allowed were attributed to tough plays rather than his fault. Fans are left wondering if Oettinger might have stopped some of those shots had he stayed in goal. DeBoer defended the decision by referencing Oettinger’s past playoff struggles versus Edmonton, but ignored his overall stellar regular-season performance, where he ranks sixth in the NHL with 48.1 goals saved above average over 174 games in three seasons.

Regardless of his playoff record against Edmonton, Dallas relies on Oettinger as their key goalie, especially given his above-average postseason stats this year. The Stars needed a team spark much earlier in the series, and benching Oettinger didn’t provide that. DeBoer’s decision left the team without their franchise goalie at a critical juncture, raising questions about whether the Stars gave themselves the best chance to win.

Fan Take: This decision highlights the intense pressure coaches face in playoff hockey, where quick changes can define a series. For fans, it underscores the importance of trusting top players through tough moments, as these choices can have lasting impacts on a team’s postseason success and player confidence.
