Less than a week ago, Carson Hocevar found himself so frustrated after a clash with Ryan Blaney during the Bristol Night Race that he ended up punching Blaney following a tense confrontation involving the fire suit. However, at Kansas Speedway, Hocevar shared that the entire situation, along with how Blaney has responded since, only deepened his respect and admiration for the seasoned Team Penske champion.
Hocevar explained, “Ryan is one of the coolest guys in the garage — he has that classic look with a mustache, smokes, and enjoys whiskey. Honestly, seeing how he handled everything made me an even bigger fan.” He praised Blaney for his honesty on Denny Hamlin’s Actions Detrimental podcast, where the 2023 Cup Series champ took partial responsibility for their on-track incident and openly admitted to the black eye Hocevar gave him, instead of hiding it.
Reflecting on the moment, Hocevar said, “When he went on the podcast, I thought, ‘Alright, respect.’ He could have easily covered up that black eye, but he owned it. Looking back, I can see that he might have just wanted to shove me and then say something, but in the heat of the moment, you don’t see that—you just assume the worst.” And so, Hocevar threw the punch.
Despite this, Blaney didn’t come to Kansas with harsh words or a fighting spirit. Instead, he acknowledged that initiating a fight was unusual for him and that his frustration was largely tied to a tough start to his Chase for the Championship. After a brake failure led to a crash at Gateway and difficulties during Darlington’s technical inspections, Blaney found himself battling more setbacks, including a collision with Hocevar while racing hard for second place.
Blaney shared, “Gateway ending the way it did was frustrating after a strong day, and starting Brysil in the back due to rain on qualifying wasn’t ideal. We fought hard and had a fast car, but then an issue on pit road and the night ending poorly again made me realize how many points we lost. It just kept piling on.” He admitted the challenges were a real mental strain, saying, “The Chase hasn’t gone how I expected, with some rough finishes and unfortunate moments that made it feel like the season might slip away.”
Meanwhile, Hocevar hopes they’ll be able to talk it out soon, believing their shared love of racing can help them move past the incident. “I’ve never really had a problem with him on track, and we’ve been running well. I think he’s a stand-up guy, and I hope he sees it was just racing and heat of the moment stuff,” Hocevar said. Blaney echoed that sentiment, saying they’ll continue racing hard as usual without any major changes in how they treat each other on the track.
This clash also brought up differing opinions on racing etiquette late in events. Hocevar is often criticized for not yielding when others expect him to, but Blaney highlighted how high-stakes moments, like their fight for second place with a potential caution nearing, can blur the lines of “fair” racing. Blaney noted, “Everyone has their own code in the garage. Sometimes it’s about making bold moves to take a spot back. It all comes down to decisions made in the heat of the race.”
Hocevar acknowledged he tries to be strategic about when to push hard but felt justified racing aggressively in that situation. “This car really thrives on defensive driving, and sometimes you have to make aggressive ‘blitz’ moves to catch someone off guard,” he explained. “I often let people by, especially those I’ve accidentally bumped before, but I also get passed a lot myself.”
When asked if they’ve spoken recently, Hocevar replied, “I haven’t seen him yet today—probably just hiding from the rain. But we’ve been cool. I even bought him a tank because he likes that stuff, so maybe we can bond a bit.”
