Xavi has expressed confidence that Joshua Zirkzee fits well with the Netherlands’ updated playing style after he was called up to the squad as an injury replacement.
Following a 1-1 draw with Germany in their Nations League opener, Brian Brobbey exited the Netherlands camp, paving the way for Zirkzee’s first call-up in nearly two years.
With six caps for the national team, Zirkzee’s last appearance was in November 2024.
The decision raised some eyebrows, especially since he has only made four substitute appearances for Manchester United this season and hasn’t scored.
Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst are regular options in the striker role, but Xavi is optimistic about Zirkzee’s integration into the squad.
“He can be very important for us. I think he’s a good player and can provide significant help,” Xavi stated.
“Our striker needs to grasp our system and philosophy, and I believe he can contribute more than others at this moment. We concentrate on selecting the right players.”

The Netherlands managed to secure a 92nd-minute equalizer from Cody Gakpo against Germany, but Xavi will consider it a deserving outcome after a strong second half.
They posted an impressive 3.2 expected goals (xG) from 22 shots, with 10 hitting the target, largely thanks to Marc ter Stegen’s nine crucial saves for Germany.
Xavi’s team is currently on a four-match winless streak in the Nations League, something he aims to rectify in their match against Serbia on Sunday.
“We need to win. This match is crucial for our placement,” Xavi emphasized.
“We will finalize the line-up on Sunday. I’m pleased with all available players right now.”
Serbia, who lost their opener 2-1 against Greece, currently sits at the bottom of Group A2, trailing behind the Netherlands.
Fan Take: This development is crucial for soccer enthusiasts as Zirkzee’s inclusion could energize the Dutch squad, especially with upcoming matches in the Nations League. The potential impact of his performance may influence the course of the competition and highlight the reshaping of the Netherlands’ playing philosophy.
