Following an extensive stewards’ review and multiple jockey objections, Coast Highway retained his victory in Saturday’s $125,000 Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds, contested at 1 1/16 miles on the Exceller Turf Course at Laurel Park.
Guided by jockey Jorge Ruiz for trainer Graham Motion, Coast Highway, competing for Amerman Racing, settled three-wide towards the back of the field as Fullcup and Bishop Moon led with fractions of :24.63 and :51.02 on a rain-softened turf rated yielding throughout the event.
On the second turn, Coast Highway was pushed four paths wide after an abrupt check by inner rival Broadcast. With six furlongs passed in 1:17.12, Fullcup drifted away from the rail, opening a route for Broadcast to advance inside. Coast Highway shifted slightly inward, while Fullcup veered outwards, leading to Howard’s Hope clipping heels and falling between the two horses; jockey Jose Lezcano was unseated as a result.
Coast Highway prevailed by a head, finishing in 1:48.38 ahead of an unlucky Broadcast. Fullcup finished third, followed by Bishop Moon, Perfect Dream, and Moneta Agenda. Howard’s Hope was able to exit the track on his own, while Lezcano was taken for precautionary X-rays after reporting dizziness and shoulder discomfort; racetrack officials confirmed he maintained full joint mobility.
Both Mychel Sanchez, aboard Broadcast, and Chantal Sutherland, riding Perfect Dream, lodged fouls against Ruiz, but the stewards dismissed these claims. Conversely, the officials ruled Fullcup responsible for the incident involving Howard’s Hope, resulting in Fullcup’s disqualification and placement to sixth position.
During the inquiry, Ruiz stated he believed Sanchez had initiated contact while trying to find racing room on the far turn. Coast Highway’s win paid $13, marking Ruiz’s third turf victory of the day. Fire Marshal was scratched from the race.
Bred in Kentucky by New Horizon Farm, Coast Highway is out of Lemoncita, a mare by Lemon Drop Kid, and is one of the first crop stakes winners by Corniche. Initially purchased for $25,000 as a yearling, Coast Highway later changed hands for $105,000 at the OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale through Amerman Racing.
Trainer Motion introduced Coast Highway in a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight event at Colonial on September 4, where the colt won comfortably by 3¾ lengths, ridden by Ruiz.
