In his first race since capturing the Robert B. Lewis (G3) 231 days earlier, Plutarch made an impressive return by dominating the $300,000 Bourbon Flight for 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The Bob Baffert-trained colt, ridden by Francisco Arrieta, won by an emphatic 6½ lengths over Local Knowledge, a previous Amsterdam (G3) winner, completing the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:41.79.
Plutarch settled into fifth position early as Infiltrate set a moderate pace with fractions of :23.83 and :48.00. Coming into the final turn, Plutarch began closing the gap with a quick burst, threading between Blackout Time and Local Knowledge. Stimulate took the lead as Infiltrate faded, but Plutarch surged from the outside, unleashing a powerful stretch run that left his rivals behind with a furlong to go for an easy victory.
“I just let him relax and find his rhythm,” said Arrieta. “Coming around the turn, I still had plenty of horse left, and he was very strong down the stretch.”
The win earned $183,450 for the Coolmore partners Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith, boosting Plutarch’s career earnings to $375,450 with a record of three wins, two seconds, and two thirds from seven starts.
Baffert, securing his fifth stakes victory during Churchill Downs’ September meet, remarked, “We always knew Plutarch was talented but had to be patient with him. He was ready to run in the Ellis Park Derby this summer, but he scraped his leg on the way there and had to be scratched. Today’s performance was truly impressive.”
Beyond Plutarch’s triumph, Baffert also recorded wins with Usha in the Open Mind, Splendora in the Locust Grove (G2), Salahudin in the Iroquois (G3), and Consequent in the Seneca Overnight.
Plutarch, a Kentucky-bred colt by Into Mischief out of Stellar Wind—a 2015 champion 3-year-old filly by Curlin—was bred by the Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt partnership tied to Coolmore. He paid $5.38 to win, with Local Knowledge finishing 1¼ lengths ahead of third-place Stimulate.
