Mauricio Pochettino expressed that the USA’s 4-1 win over Peru was a thrilling experience that “gave me goosebumps,” as he introduced many fresh faces at Inter.co Stadium.
Following his new four-year contract that came after the World Cup, the Argentine coach awarded 11 players their senior team debuts on Saturday, with numerous newcomers making significant contributions.
Justin Ellis and Julian Hall both scored during their first international appearances, while Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter also found the back of the net.
Mathis Albert also stood out after coming off the bench, particularly by winning the penalty that Tillman converted into a goal.
Out of the 11 debutants, eight were teenagers, and Pochettino praised their rapid adjustment to the senior squad.
“I am very proud of their performance,” Pochettino stated.
“Seeing these young players step in, embrace the experience, and play with such freedom and bravery – it truly gave me goosebumps at times.
“It’s all about opportunity: providing chances and expecting them to seize them. What we witnessed is that the future is here, but soccer is also about the present. They demonstrated they can compete right now.”

All attention was drawn to 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan—turning 17 on Monday—who made headlines as the youngest player to earn a senior cap for the USA since Freddy Adu in 2006.
He was among three debutants in the starting lineup, and Pochettino emphasized his commitment to providing opportunities for as many players as possible during the new World Cup cycle.
“No one should assume their spot is secure based on past accomplishments,” he clarified.
“This is a fresh start, a new chapter. Everyone has an open door, but they must earn their place every single day.”
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it showcases a bold new direction for the U.S. Men’s National Team, emphasizing youth and meritocracy. Such a fresh approach could invigorate the sport in the country, suggesting a brighter future ahead.
