James L. Gagliano will step down as president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club on January 1, 2027, according to a statement from Everett R. Dobson, chair of the organization. Taking over as chief operating officer on the same date will be Charlotte Clement de Bona, who currently serves as chief strategy and transformation officer.
Gagliano began his career with The Jockey Club in 2005 as executive vice president and chief administrative officer and has held the president and COO roles since January 2010. Dobson praised Gagliano’s 21 years of service, particularly highlighting his 16 years at the helm, noting that under his leadership, The Jockey Club spearheaded many vital initiatives that have positively transformed the Thoroughbred racing industry. His work helped establish the organization as a key force in promoting the sport’s long-term health and welfare.
During Gagliano’s presidency, The Jockey Club increased its marketing efforts and fan engagement via America’s Best Racing, expanded televised coverage, especially through FOX Sports, and advanced Thoroughbred aftercare with programs like the Thoroughbred Incentive Program and Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. The organization also enhanced equine and rider safety with initiatives such as the Equine Injury Database and the Jockey Health Information System. Additionally, The Jockey Club played a crucial role in the passage of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2020 and the establishment of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, setting national standards for integrity and safety in the sport. These efforts, along with many others launched under Gagliano’s leadership, have contributed greatly to the future well-being of the Thoroughbred and horse racing.
Beyond his work at The Jockey Club, Gagliano will continue to represent North America internationally as vice chair of the executive council for the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, a position he has held since 2010.
Reflecting on his retirement, Gagliano said, “After more than 21 years with The Jockey Club, the time has come for new beginnings. It has been an honor to lead this organization and the Thoroughbred industry through a time of remarkable progress. I am grateful to the board members who entrusted me with this responsibility and proud to have worked alongside a dedicated team and passionate industry professionals. I wish The Jockey Club ongoing success and look forward to supporting its mission internationally.”
The Jockey Club will soon begin a search for a new chief executive officer to guide the organization forward.
Founded in 1894, The Jockey Club is devoted to improving Thoroughbred breeding and racing. It serves as the breed registry for Thoroughbreds in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico and supports numerous key industry programs, including America’s Best Racing, OwnerView, and the Thoroughbred Incentive Program.
