Al Hilal Sets Sights on Fernandes: Key Trades Ahead of CWC!

Al-Hilal is exploring the idea of acquiring Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes within the next fortnight, aiming for him to participate in the Club World Cup, according to ESPN sources. The Saudi Arabian top-tier club is keen to secure high-profile signings ahead of the tournament set to take place in the U.S. next month.

Following the conclusion of discussions with Mohamed Salah, who renewed his contract with Liverpool, Al-Hilal has shifted its focus to other potential targets, including Fernandes. Manchester United’s manager, Reuben Amorim, has increasingly asserted that the Portuguese international is unavailable.

Despite this, sources indicate that Al-Hilal, along with other Saudi investors, believes United might be tempted to entertain an extravagant offer for the 30-year-old midfielder. The club’s financial pressures, compounded by their absence from European competitions next season, may influence their decision. They are currently grappling with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations due to several cost-cutting measures initiated by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United has some financial flexibility this summer and is set to activate a £62.5 million ($84.2 million) release clause for Matheus Cunha, a forward from Wolverhampton. Losing Fernandes would pose a significant challenge for Amorim, but it could also provide him with a substantial transfer kitty, potentially around £100 million, to revitalize his squad.

Amorim recently missed out on signing Liam Dellup from Ipswich Town. While United was prepared to activate a £30 million release clause for the striker and fulfill salary requirements, Dellup opted for Chelsea, citing the allure of Champions League participation as a deciding factor.

Fan Take: This potential transfer is crucial for soccer fans as it highlights the growing influence and financial power of leagues outside Europe, particularly in Saudi Arabia. If Fernandes makes the move, it could spark a trend of star players seeking lucrative opportunities away from traditional powerhouses, reshaping the landscape of global football.
