United States coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed disappointment over the apparent lack of “sporting justice” following reports that Manchester City has been found guilty of nearly all of the 115 financial breach charges against them. These alleged violations occurred between 2009 and 2018 while Pochettino was managing Tottenham, a club that achieved competitive success despite a smaller budget.
The Premier League has yet to confirm the findings, which, according to various media outlets, came from an independent commission after a lengthy investigation. Pochettino stated, “If it’s true that the 114 rules were broken, then we lived through a period of deception,” as he spoke on the eve of a friendly match where the U.S. men’s team will face Chile. He acknowledged the damage caused by potential rule-breaking and expressed uncertainty about what punishment might be enforced.
Earlier this month, Pochettino also called for Chelsea to be stripped of the 2016-17 Premier League title due to 74 breaches of regulations related to agents and player investments. Chelsea received a fine of £10 million (around $13.4 million) and a suspended two-window transfer ban after appealing the punishment. Chelsea had won the title that season by a seven-point lead over Tottenham, which had a significantly tighter budget but still reached the Champions League final in 2019.
Pochettino noted that many clubs adhered to the rules while others did not, stating, “What’s going to happen—financial penalties? Points deductions? I don’t know. It’s very difficult, honestly.” He lamented the situation, saying, “It’s sad. It’s deeply sad. Because, in the end, we’ve entered into a situation where what was celebrated wasn’t really what we thought it was.”
Manchester City has consistently denied any wrongdoing, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak reasserting the club’s innocence following the verdict reports.
Fan Take: This situation highlights a growing concern about transparency and integrity in soccer, making it crucial for fans who cherish the sport’s fairness. How authorities handle the outcomes could significantly impact trust in the league and its governance, signaling whether financial power will overshadow fair play.
