Tim Ream, who has served as the captain and defender for the U.S. men’s soccer team for many years, has announced his retirement from international play. Although he had assured head coach Mauricio Pochettino that he wouldn’t step away, he now believes the team’s evolution and the game’s progression necessitate his exit from the national squad.
“The younger players are coming in, and I don’t just mean my own kids,” Ream said prior to a friendly match against Chile in his hometown. “I consider this retirement. We’ve debated how to describe it, but ultimately, it’s time for me to step away from national team duties. I’m proud of my 16 years with the team, but now it’s time for a change.”
At 38, Ream has made 86 appearances for the national team since debuting in a friendly match against South Africa on November 17, 2010. He ranks closely behind DaMarcus Beasley for the most caps (60) accumulated after turning 30.
Ream captained the team in 26 games, including four at the recent World Cup. He expressed pride in his role, stating, “It’s an honor. My main goal has been to help the next generation step into leadership roles and enhance the team further.”
Looking ahead, Ream sees a bright future for the U.S. squad, highlighting the potential of emerging talents like 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who remind him of the rising stars such as Gio Reyna, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie. “What stands out is the confidence these youngsters possess, similar to when the current core players were introduced. It’s refreshing and essential to have that self-belief, even if it occasionally crosses into cockiness,” he noted, acknowledging their continuous growth.
Ream confirmed that he will keep playing for MLS’ Charlotte FC but hasn’t made any decisions regarding his future at the club.
Fan Take: Ream’s retirement marks the end of an era, representing a transition to a newer generation of talent in U.S. soccer. For fans, this shift not only reflects the changing dynamics within the team but also hints at an exciting future filled with potential stars ready to take the game to new heights.
