Bayern Munich’s supervisory board member, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, does not foresee the club rekindling their interest in Florian Wirtz anytime soon, even though the German international has faced difficulties at Liverpool.
Wirtz, who played a crucial role in leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season, transferred to Liverpool for €137 million (£116 million) last year. This season at Liverpool, he has played six times, contributing a single assist despite creating 12 chances, which ranks third among his teammates. Rummenigge clarified his stance, stating, “That’s not my job,” when asked about Wirtz’s future. He noted that there’s no pressing need for Bayern to acquire another player at the likely cost Wirtz would command, and mentioned uncertainty about the player’s happiness at Liverpool. He also recalled prior discussions he and Uli Hoeness had with Wirtz’s family, acknowledging their decision to join Liverpool.
When asked if he was surprised by Wirtz’s struggles in the Premier League, Rummenigge replied affirmatively, recalling that Wirtz was enticed by a promise from then-manager Arne Slot regarding a number 10 role he had previously occupied at Leverkusen. He stated that while there were no significant financial disparities, Wirtz ultimately made his own decision, which deserves careful consideration.
Wirtz is presently representing Germany, who have secured four points from their opening two Nations League matches under Jurgen Klopp, as they prepare to face Serbia on Thursday.
