Pelicans’ Zion Williamson Faces Lawsuit Alleging Years of Abuse, Including Rape and Bomb Threats

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson faces accusations of rape and various forms of abuse—including sexual, physical, emotional, and financial—that reportedly began during his freshman year and persisted from 2018 to 2023, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. The complainant, identified as Jane Doe, alleges a prolonged pattern of controlling and threatening behavior throughout their multi-year relationship, with incidents spanning several states including Louisiana and California, per an ESPN report.

The lawsuit claims the first instance of sexual violence occurred in a Beverly Hills home rented by Williamson, with two alleged rapes in Los Angeles in 2020. It also accuses Williamson of threatening to kill Jane Doe’s parents in Louisiana between 2020 and 2023. Additional allegations include strangulation, kicking, hitting her against a car door, and suffocation resulting in loss of consciousness. The suit seeks monetary damages for psychological suffering.

Williamson’s attorney, Michael Baraccio, stated that Williamson and the plaintiff never had a casual relationship beginning six years ago, labeling the allegations as "decisively false and reckless." Baraccio noted that no complaints were raised during or soon after the relationship and suggested that the plaintiff is seeking financial gain after the friendship ended. He also confirmed that Williamson intends to report what he describes as an extortion attempt to law enforcement and plans to file a counterclaim.

Baraccio emphasized the seriousness of the allegations but strongly denied them, suggesting the lawsuit may be financially motivated rather than legitimate. Meanwhile, Jane Doe’s lawyer told the Daily Mail the case is serious and reflected in the complaints submitted to Los Angeles County, expressing confidence in achieving justice through the court.

Williamson, a two-time NBA All-Star and the 2019 first overall pick by New Orleans, stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 280 pounds. Over six years, he has averaged 24.7 points per game but has played in only 214 out of 472 regular-season games due to injuries, with no playoff appearances. He played 30 games in the 2024-25 season before a season-ending back injury in March. Earlier in April, Williamson was linked to a family burglary case involving the mother of his child, though his name was not included in the affidavit.

This is a developing story.

Fan Take: This news matters deeply to basketball fans because Zion Williamson is a prominent and talented player whose off-court issues could overshadow his career and impact the Pelicans’ future. The outcome of these allegations could set important precedents for how the NBA and sports communities address serious personal conduct cases involving star athletes.
