Grade 1 winner Basin will stand at Whispering Oaks Farm in Carencro, Louisiana, for the 2027 breeding season. The 9-year-old stallion, a son of Liam’s Map, began his stud career at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky in 2022, and his oldest offspring will be 3-year-olds in 2026.
From his first two foal crops, Basin has sired 32 winners whose combined earnings surpass $1.4 million. Among his notable progeny are Bolero Bay, winner of the English Channel Stakes and runner-up in the Not Surprising Stakes at Gulfstream Park; Somavia, who captured last year’s Iowa Sorority Stakes at Prairie Meadows; and Gold Basin, a multiple Group 2-placed stakes competitor in Panama during 2025.
Basin’s racing career was highlighted by a dominant 6 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes as a two-year-old. At three, he posted in-the-money finishes in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, and Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes, then went on to claim the Sir Shackleton Stakes at four. He retired with three wins from 12 starts and earned $573,640 throughout his career.
Bred in Kentucky by Cottonwood Stables, Basin is out of Appenzell, a winning mare by Johannesburg, making him a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Rise Up.
Fan Take: Basin’s move to Louisiana signals an exciting opportunity for regional breeders to access proven Grade 1 talent, potentially boosting the quality of horses in the Southern breeding program. For racing fans, it’s thrilling to see a successful sire gaining broader exposure, which could lead to fresh, competitive talent emerging in the coming years.
