Filming has concluded on the feature documentary “Cody’s Wish / The Cody Dorman Story: What Makes a Champion?,” which tells the inspiring true tale of champion racehorse Cody’s Wish and his unique connection with his namesake, Cody Dorman—a Kentucky teen with a rare genetic condition who adores horse racing. Currently in post-production, the film aims for a theatrical release in Spring 2027.
The story began unexpectedly in 2018 when five-month-old foal, later named Cody’s Wish, approached Dorman during a Make-A-Wish visit at Gainsborough Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. The foal placed his head in Dorman’s lap, showing an instant bond that continued throughout subsequent visits. The horse was named Cody’s Wish in honor of Dorman and the Make-A-Wish Foundation that brought them together.
This touching relationship became central to an extraordinary racing journey. As Cody’s Wish developed into one of horse racing’s leading champions, Dorman remained a steady figure by his side. Remarkably, the horse never lost a race when Dorman was present. Highlights of Cody’s Wish’s career include winning back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile titles, the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes on Kentucky Derby day, the G1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, and the G1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga, among others.
Emotionally, the story peaked in November 2023 when Cody’s Wish won his second Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in the final race of his career, coming from last place to win by a nose. This victory secured his 2023 Horse of the Year award, coming just one day before Dorman’s passing.
The documentary features interviews from individuals who witnessed the horse and boy’s story firsthand, including Cody’s parents Kelly and Leslie Dorman; jockey Junior Alvarado, who rode Cody’s Wish to 11 wins in 16 starts; Faith Hacker, former Make-A-Wish director who arranged their initial meeting; Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott; turf journalist and author Paul Halloran; Godolphin executives Dan Pride and Michael Banahan; and legendary trainer Bob Baffert, whose Preakness winner National Treasure narrowly lost to Cody’s Wish in his final race.
Filmed on location in Kentucky and New York, the documentary is produced by Enliven Content, a company founded by acclaimed filmmakers Jeff Celentano and Warren Ostergard, known for focusing on uplifting true stories. Cinematography was led by award-winning Daniel Hollis, renowned for verité style and collaborations with platforms such as Netflix, HBO, and National Geographic. Editing was handled by Chris Herde, an Emmy-winning editor and producer with experience across major networks including HBO, Showtime, and Amazon Prime Video.
