Registration is now open for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC), the largest live-money handicapping tournament in Thoroughbred racing. Now in its 18th year, the BCBC annually draws premier horseplayers from across North America, with the champion determined by the highest bankroll accumulated over the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships, scheduled for October 30-31 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. For registration and full details on the 2026 rules, visit BreedersCup.com/BCBC.
The total cash prize pool for the 2026 BCBC is projected to reach $1.5 million, based on at least 600 registered participants. Entrants can compete either at Keeneland, at the official satellite location at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, or online through TVG.com—the Breeders’ Cup’s official wagering partner—as well as via Keeneland Select, Xpressbet.com, Twinspires.com, NYRABets.com (for non-New York residents), 4NJBets.com (New Jersey residents only), and HPIbet.com (Canadian residents only).
Each player must commit to a $2,500 buy-in along with a $7,500 betting bankroll, totaling $10,000. All buy-in fees contribute directly to the prize pool. Players can place bets on Win, Place, Show, Exacta, Trifecta, and Daily Double pools during the World Championships and retain any winnings they accrue.
Tim Schram, BCBC tournament director, noted, “The Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge unites some of the country’s most skilled horseplayers for two days of intense competition at the World Championships. After a record-breaking BCBC in 2025, we’re excited to welcome participants to Keeneland and offer horseplayers across North America a chance to compete in one of horse racing’s premier handicapping tournaments.”
Players can also win a free entry by triumphing in a BCBC qualifying contest. Visit BreedersCup.com/BCBC for upcoming live qualifiers and HorsePlayers.com for online qualifying opportunities.
The 2025 BCBC, held at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, set new records with 643 entries—surpassing the previous record of 585 in 2024—and generated about $8.9 million in total wagering handle. On-site betting at Del Mar totaled nearly $4.5 million, representing roughly 23% of the track’s overall betting during the World Championships. With an average of $13,846 wagered per entry, the tournament marked its highest handle per player since 2014.
Dave Smyth, a financial planner from Lexington, claimed the 2025 BCBC title with a thrilling finish. Entering the final race in 45th place with $19,000, Smyth hit an $8,000 Daily Double that included Nysos in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and Gezora in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), propelling him to first place. He closed with a $144,800 bankroll and earned a total of $607,800 from his victory.
