Slaven Bilic has stated that Croatia should “be especially cautious” with Luka Modric as they gear up to face England in the Nations League.
Croatia began their Nations League journey with a 2-1 victory over Czechia but suffered a 4-1 defeat to Spain in their most recent match.
Modric scored the opening goal against Czechia, marking the first goal of Bilic’s second stint with the national team.
In the game against Spain, the 41-year-old came on as a late substitute while Spain held a commanding lead.
Bilic emphasized the importance of managing Modric’s playing time but expressed confidence in the AC Milan midfielder’s ability to contribute to the team.
“As with many players, we must pay attention to his workload, which is why we handle his situation with special care,” Bilic said.
“He is truly one of a kind. There’s a saying that age is just a number, and in his case, it certainly feels true.”

“He keeps producing because he is exceptional and incredibly valuable to the team.
“He embodies more than just a player or captain; he is an icon. His significance is unmistakable, seen in every interaction and meeting.”
“Most importantly, he continues to make a difference on the field.”
Croatia has won eight of their last nine competitive home matches (D1), following a 1-0 defeat to Turkiye in a European Championship qualifier last October.
Although they have lost only four of their last 41 competitive home games, three of those defeats came in the Nations League (against France and Portugal in 2020 and Austria in 2022).
Bilic’s team will primarily play behind closed doors due to crowd-related issues with Croatian fans during a March 2025 Nations League match against France, with the exception of schoolchildren and 100 traveling England fans.
Since their victory over England in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, Croatia has failed to win in four encounters with the Three Lions (D1, L3).
Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing impact of veteran players like Luka Modric, whose experience and talent can sway the outcome of key matches. The upcoming clash with England not only tests Croatia’s resolve but also sets the stage for a potential turning point in their recent struggles against a rival that has historically posed challenges.
