Englishman, a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, was unable to complete a scheduled workout at Keeneland on Friday morning due to a foot problem, according to the Daily Racing Form. The Cherie DeVaux-trained sophomore had planned to train on October 2 but had to pause after two recent half-mile workouts on September 18 and 25, following his impressive 3 ¾-length triumph in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.
DeVaux expressed optimism, saying, “If all goes well, we believe there’s sufficient time to get back on track and make it to the Breeders’ Cup,” which will take place at Keeneland on October 31 and cover six furlongs. Englishman’s win in the Allen Jerkens marked his second Grade 1 victory this year. Back in June, he set a Saratoga track record for seven furlongs during his dominant 5 ¾-length victory in the Woody Stephens, clocking a final time of 1:20.44.
Bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock, Englishman was acquired by Mayberry Farm for $400,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
