Patrick Mahomes Passes the Torch of Olympic Flag Football to the Next Generation

Flag Football is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games, but Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn’t anticipate participating. Speaking to Fox Sports NFL reporter Henry McKenna, Mahomes noted, “I’ll be a little older by then,” as he will be 32 when the Los Angeles event occurs.

Last year, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named as the NFL’s flag football ambassador for the Olympics. Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP, had an outstanding 15-2 season, completing 67.5% of his passes for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with a passer rating of 93.5. He also rushed for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Among quarterbacks, Mahomes ranked second in rushing grade and was in the top 15 for passing grades last season.

Despite leading the AFC, Mahomes and the Chiefs couldn’t clinch a three-peat, falling to the Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LVII, reversing their previous victory over Philadelphia. These two teams are scheduled to face off again in Week 2 of the 2025 regular season on September 14th at 4:25 pm, broadcasted on Fox and the Fox Sports app.

Fan Take: This news highlights the expanding reach of football with Flag Football entering the Olympics, showing the sport’s growing global appeal. For NFL fans, Mahomes’ comments reflect the ongoing cycle of players balancing longevity and legacy, while the Chiefs vs. Eagles rivalry continues to shape exciting seasons ahead.
