Yedsit Hazlewood is embarking on an exciting new phase in his riding career this fall as he makes his debut at Keeneland, competing against some of the nation’s top jockeys and building trust with trainers who recognize his talent. At just 18 years old and hailing from Panama, Hazlewood is already making a notable impression at the historic Lexington racetrack.
“It’s a different kind of experience riding with the best trainers and jockeys, so I’m really excited,” said Hazlewood, who is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey in 2025 and currently ranks among the top five riders by wins, boasting 214 as of last Friday. After his first race at Keeneland, Hazlewood expressed admiration for the venue. “It was very good. It’s beautiful here. I think it’s my favorite place now,” he shared.
Trainer Ron Moquett, who is among Hazlewood’s supporters, highlighted the young jockey’s consistent ability to win and his athleticism. “He wins a lot of races; that’s what I like about him,” Moquett said. “He brings energy.” Moquett gave Hazlewood his debut ride at Keeneland aboard Mena in Friday’s second race, where the horse finished fourth. Comparing Hazlewood to a young Ricardo Santana Jr., Moquett noted, “He’s athletic and horses run for him. He still has work to do to reach Santana’s level, but I’d rather have someone full of energy than someone who tires easily.”
Trainer Wesley Ward, winner of the 1984 Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice, also sees great promise in Hazlewood and believes that riding at Keeneland alongside experienced jockeys will fast-track his growth. Ward named Hazlewood to ride three horses over Wednesday and Thursday. “He’s very talented and determined. This is the perfect place for him because it’s where the best jockeys in the U.S. compete,” Ward said.
Ward added that learning from elite riders such as Irad Ortiz Jr. and John Velazquez will be invaluable. “You look left, and there’s Irad; look right, and there’s Johnny V. Like in any sport, competing with the best will push him to improve. He’s going to get much better as a rider.”
