In Saturday’s Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, American History overcame an early duel between the leading favorites to secure a powerful victory. Ridden by John Velazquez, the 2-year-old colt by Constitution steadily closed the gap on front-runners Coach Pope and Q B Rocket during the stretch, ultimately winning the $650,000 race by about a length. He completed the 1 1/16 miles on the fast Keeneland track in 1:44.88 and earned an automatic spot in the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at the same venue.
Velazquez, who notched his third win of the day, recounted that American History had a rough start—breaking outward and trailing at the first turn. He settled behind other horses, tolerating getting dirt kicked up, before finding a smooth rhythm along the backstretch. By angling three-wide, the colt began to close in and surged forward in the final moments to overtake his rivals.
Though American History was still several lengths behind entering the stretch, his long stride and persistent running style allowed him to steadily gain ground until he crossed the finish line first. Coach Pope held on for second place, with Q B Rocket finishing third.
This triumph marked American History’s second win in as many starts for trainer Todd Pletcher. The colt debuted with a commanding 7 3/4-length win at Saratoga in August. Purchased for $825,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, he is sired by Constitution out of the War Front mare Bloody Point. Bred in Kentucky by Alpha Delta Stables, American History races under the ownership of WinStar Farm, First Go Racing, and China Horse Club.
WinStar Farm’s new president and CEO, Gerry Duffy, praised the horse’s connections for the effort that led to this key victory, which also marked the farm’s eighth graded stakes win at Keeneland. Duffy acknowledged the integral role of Kenny Troutt and his family in their continued success and expressed gratitude for sharing the milestone with them.
With a flawless record and now a Grade 1 win, American History is positioned as a top contender heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile later this month.
Fan Take: American History’s come-from-behind victory highlights the thrilling unpredictability that makes horse racing so captivating. His rising star could inject new excitement into the sport, offering fans a fresh champion to rally behind as the Breeders’ Cup approaches.
