As the NFL season heats up, the MLB postseason is also reaching an intense peak, showcasing the thrilling pressure and competition both sports bring. While NFL athletes are among the most talented globally, could any of them excel in Major League Baseball? Three World Series legends—Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, and Derek Jeter—know exactly what it takes to succeed on the baseball field.
These icons appeared on “Fox NFL Kickoff” alongside Charles Woodson and Julian Edelman to discuss which football stars might successfully transition to baseball. The conversation naturally turned toward who among these athletes could be powerful home run hitters.
Here are the NFL players Woodson and Edelman believe have the skills to shine in MLB.
Which NFL Player Would Make the Best Shortstop?
Woodson’s Take: Patrick Mahomes stands out. Baseball runs in his family, and he’s known for his extraordinary throwing ability—from any position and with various angles, including behind the back and sidearm throws.
Edelman’s Take: I’d pick Caleb Williams. Similar to Mahomes, he has great range, a strong arm, and quick hands that would make him an excellent shortstop, especially with his ability to throw from different angles while moving.
Which NFL Player Would Make the Best Third Baseman?
Woodson’s Take: With his strong arm and size, Josh Allen fits the bill. He’s athletic and agile, capable of making the long throws required across the diamond and moving side-to-side with ease.
Edelman’s Take: Matthew Stafford seems like a perfect fit for third base. He likely processes plays quickly, much like a defensive strategist, and can deliver precise, powerful throws across the field.
Who Would Be the Ultimate Home Run Hitter?
Edelman’s Take: Ja’Marr Chase, a big, focused player, reminds me of David Ortiz’s power. He can break away for long catches and turn short plays into big scoring opportunities.
Woodson’s Take: Jahmyr Gibbs is a natural assassin on the field, always ready to take it to the end zone. His laser focus and ability to make game-changing plays make him a standout candidate for power hitting.
Fan Take: This crossover discussion highlights how athleticism and skill can transcend sports, fueling curiosity about NFL players’ potential in baseball. For fans, it underscores the exciting possibility of future multi-sport talents making an impact in both the NFL and MLB, enriching the landscape of American sports.
