Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) and the nearby 0.375-mile Bullring have been honoring local hero and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch throughout the race weekend. Busch tragically passed away suddenly at the age of 41 in May, just days after achieving his 234th and final NASCAR victory in a Truck Series race at Dover.
Following the announcement of Busch’s death, numerous Nevada fans made their way to LVMS to create an impromptu memorial at the track. Busch secured seven wins across NASCAR’s three national series at LVMS and enjoyed many victories at the Bullring during his early years. As NASCAR visits Las Vegas for the first time without Kyle, the speedway has left no stone unturned in commemorating his legacy.
A memorial rock featuring Kyle’s signature bow was unveiled near the Bullring, attended by his wife Samantha, children Brexton and Lennix, brother Kurt, and parents Tom and Gaye. Actor Michael Rooker, whose “Days of Thunder” character ‘Rowdy’ Burns inspired Busch’s well-known nickname, was also present for the tribute.
During the ‘Kyle Busch Classic’ at the Bullring, various races were held with Brexton Busch throwing the green flag to start the ARCA Menards West Series race, which featured ‘Forever Rowdy’ painted on the walls. Brexton also competed in a Legends Car race later that night.
Beyond the track, two streets leading to the Bullring were renamed in honor of Kyle and his brother Kurt Busch—“Rowdy Road” and “Busch Brothers Drive.” Kurt will additionally drive the pace car for Sunday’s race, sporting a special decal remembering Kyle. Both brothers have claimed Cup Series wins at LVMS, with Kyle triumphing in 2009 and Kurt in 2020.
LVMS has also integrated several tributes throughout the venue, such as a black No. 8 painted in the infield grass, “Forever Rowdy” banners above the track, a display featuring Kyle’s M&M’s car and 2019 championship trophy, and large tribute banners by South Point on the grandstands. A tribute wall in the concourse lets fans share their memories, and a silent lap 8 is planned during the Cup race to honor Kyle’s memory.
Though not organized by the track, Kyle Larson will pay homage to Busch with a special paint scheme replicating the No. 5 Kellogg’s car that Busch once drove for Hendrick Motorsports early in his Cup career, featuring the nickname “Tiny Kyle” above the door, a moniker Busch gave Larson.
Fan Take: This heartfelt tribute across Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Bullring reminds NASCAR fans of the incredible impact Kyle Busch had on the sport, both on and off the track. Honoring his legacy in such a comprehensive way helps keep his memory alive while inspiring future generations of racers and supporters alike.
