Joe Mixon is heading back to the NFL, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Monday, saying the 30-year-old running back will sign with the Seattle Seahawks after working out for the team earlier in the day. ESPN’s Adam Schefter added that Seattle intends to place Mixon on its practice squad once he clears a physical.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Mixon spent 2017–23 with the Cincinnati Bengals and had a stint with the Houston Texans in 2024–25; reports say the Texans granted his offseason request for release. He missed the entire last season due to a foot injury that Texans GM Nick Caserio called “kind of a freak thing.”
Seattle recently put rookie running back Jadarian Price on injured reserve with a chest issue, and Emanuel Wilson stepped up in Price’s absence, rushing 21 times for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Seahawks’ 30–23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Mixon would bring veteran depth to the defending Super Bowl champions’ backfield.
This is a developing story.
Fan take: Mixon’s return matters because a proven, experienced back could be a short-term fix for a Super Bowl champion needing depth and insurance behind young backs. If he’s healthy, his presence could reshape Seattle’s roster decisions and influence how teams evaluate veteran running backs coming off injuries.
