SACRAMENTO, CA ― It feels like just yesterday that JJ Redick stepped into the NBA as a rookie head coach, despite having no prior coaching background. His appointment sparked widespread conversation, as it was surprising to see a former podcaster transition so smoothly onto an NBA sidelines and find success.
Redick approached the opportunity as a personal challenge. As a former player, he dedicated himself to constant self-improvement and was always ready to outwork others. He has carried that same relentless mindset into his coaching career.
This dedication has aided his growth as he enters his third season leading the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I’m someone who constantly evaluates myself and remains self-aware,” Redick shared with USA TODAY Sports ahead of the Lakers’ preseason victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday, Oct. 5. “There’s a term, metacognition, where you think about how you think. There’s a lot happening in my mind.”
Now 42, Redick is known for his deep, thoughtful nature. His mind never stops working—even when he appears relaxed, he’s mentally engaged. This constant thinking has helped him develop as a coach, always seeking ways to improve.
“When you live with this kind of self-honesty, whether it’s reflecting on interactions with players, how you manage emotions with referees, communicate strategy in pregame talks, or run practices—your brain keeps analyzing all these elements,” he explained. “I believe I’ve grown across every one of those areas.”
Looking ahead, the upcoming 2026-27 season will bring a new challenge for Redick, as it will be his first without the presence of four-time NBA champion LeBron James. The Lakers will now revolve their offense around MVP hopeful Luka Dončić, adopting a fresh team identity.
Redick remains eager as he continues his coaching journey and pursues excellence.
“That’s the exciting part for me—much like shooting a basketball, it’s the pursuit of mastery,” he said. “Coaching is always evolving and adapting, so I’ll never fully master it, but every day brings something new.”
