LAS VEGAS – Sal Everett isn’t quite ready to give up his role as a UFC employee, even after securing a UFC contract.
Everett (5-0) earned his contract by delivering a first-round knockout against Ozzy Martin (4-1) at Tuesday’s Dana White’s Contender Series 95, held at Meta APEX. Despite Dana White’s statement that Everett no longer needs to work for him now that he is officially a UFC fighter, the 29-year-old feels he isn’t quite at that point yet.
“I want to stay in this building,” Everett shared during the DWCS 95 post-fight press conference. “I love it here, and if something isn’t broken, why fix it? I’m happy to keep working… I guess that’s an issue for the legal folks upstairs. I’m just a guy who runs errands, so what do I know? I’m here to work and fight. I recently heard Dana mention he doesn’t think I need to shift to Zuffa Boxing or Power Slap, so I’m glad to keep working for him.”
Everett not only wants to maintain his job but also hopes to remain very active as a fighter.
“I want to be very busy,” he said. “I’m here to enjoy myself, and as a fan of the welterweight division, I want to build my record by facing everyone in this weight class.”
Balancing work with training is something Everett has already managed while preparing for DWCS.
“I used all my paid time off and sick days to take a month off just to focus on this fight, and Dana and Nicole fully supported me,” he explained. “It worked out great because I could train multiple times a day… For sure, I want to keep fighting, but bills don’t pay themselves, so I have to keep putting food on the table.”
