Newcastle United are already putting plans in place to continue their youth-focused recruitment strategy in 2027, following a summer of significant rebuilding under Matthias Jaissle.
The Magpies welcomed a number of exciting young talents to Tyneside during the summer transfer window, including Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba, while several more experienced figures departed for substantial fees.
It has left Jaissle with a youthful squad still finding its feet, and the Newcastle boss recently reiterated the importance of patience following his side’s defeat to Coventry City.
“We knew we had a young squad and knew they needed time, we will give them that time,” he said.
“As long as we see the improvement and there is the potential to fulfil, it is important that we are working hard to see improvements week to week.
“Of course, these are young lads, and that can happen. But will support them throughout the whole journey.”
Newcastle’s summer overhaul | Previous Club | Fee |
|---|---|---|
Nico Gonzalez | Man City | £52m |
Matias Fernandez-Pardo | LOSC Lille | £51m |
Bazoumana Toure | Hoffenheim | £42m |
Aladji Bamba | Monaco | £34m |
Amar Dedic | Benfica | £29.5m |
Lukas Hornicek | Braga | £25.7m |
Ewen Jaouen | Stade Reims | £24m |
Sean Steur | Ajax | £23m |
Jaissle also stressed that Newcastle’s rebuilding process was always going to come with challenges, having been aware of the scale of the task when taking charge.
“We were aware at the beginning. We knew it was a long-term project and a brave journey.
“The club is going through a brave journey. With these ups and downs, we were calculating that.
“We still need to improve and improve fast in the Premier League. Small margins decide games and you saw that in both boxes.”
And Newcastle appear determined to stick with that long-term approach, with another highly-rated European youngster now emerging as a potential transfer target.
Newcastle eye Daniel Banjaqui transfer at half his release clause
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, via Sport Witness, Newcastle are among the clubs showing an interest in Benfica right-back Daniel Banjaqui, having already gathered information about a potential move for the 18-year-old.
The Portugal Under-21 international has attracted attention from several European heavyweights, with Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter Milan also making enquiries about his availability.
However, Newcastle have now been handed encouragement over the potential cost of a deal, with Benfica reportedly willing to consider offers between €35m and €40m (£30m–£35m). That could see the Magpies land Banjaqui for just half of his €80m (£69m) release clause, although the Portuguese giants have yet to establish a firm asking price.
Benfica believe the teenager’s value will continue to rise as he develops, while his contract until 2031 leaves them under little pressure to sell.
Newcastle could also have a slight advantage in negotiations after completing the signing of Amar Dedic from Benfica during the summer, although the growing competition for Banjaqui’s signature could complicate their plans.
The defender has made three first-team appearances for Benfica this season and recently scored for Portugal Under-21s, with Newcastle seemingly keen to secure another promising young talent before his value increases further.
