It took a bit of extra time, but Dennis Bouanga thrilled the Los Angeles FC fans by helping his team secure a victory in the FIFA Club World Cup, winning 2-1 after extra minutes. A crucial header from Igor Jesus at the end of regulation, along with a missed penalty by former LAFC player Brian Rodriguez, pushed the match into extra time, where Bouanga guided the team to triumph against Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami, both representing MLS in this expanded tournament. With this victory, LAFC is set to earn nearly $10 million in prize money and could boost their earnings based on performance in the tournament.

LAFC will be placed in Group D alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Espérance Sportive de Tunis. The first half of the match saw both teams using a cautious strategy, likely aware that a misstep could cost them dearly in the Club World Cup. Although both sides made adjustments, a mistake from Marco Delgado led to a penalty for Club America, which they converted. Following this setback, LAFC’s coach made an offensive substitution, and Bouanga capitalized on an 89th-minute corner from Igor Jesus to force extra time.

In extra time, LAFC dominated the chances, outshooting Club America 19 to 9 and managing eight shots on target, making them the only team to score from open play throughout the match. LAFC now faces a tight schedule leading up to the tournament, which begins on June 14th, especially since Club León had to withdraw due to violations of multi-club ownership rules. With their first match against Chelsea on June 16th, preparations are crucial, but LAFC faces limitations in adding new players due to Major League Soccer roster rules, despite a special transfer window from June 1st to June 10th.

For now, however, the team is focused on proving themselves on a global stage, showcasing what they can achieve among 32 competing teams in the upcoming Club World Cup.

Fan Take: This victory is a monumental achievement for LAFC, especially as they gear up for a prestigious global competition. It not only boosts their profile but also highlights the growth of MLS on the international soccer scene, capturing the attention of fans eager to see American clubs succeed abroad.
