Crystal Palace have been internally discussing a move for a Sean Dyche alternative, with Pierre Sage’s future at Selhurst Park now up in the air.
Following the 2-0 defeat at home against Newcastle United on Sunday, there has been major speculation surrounding Pierre Sage’s future, and Dyche has been named as the frontrunner to take over at Palace.
Considering a relegation battle could be on the cards this season, with the Eagles currently just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, the ex-Everton boss could be a safe pair of hands, given that he has bags of experience when it comes to guiding teams to safety.
The 55-year-old famously kept the Toffees up on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign, while he also established Burnley in the Premier League, and even secured a seventh-place finish for the Clarets in the 2018-18 season.
Sean Dyche’s managerial record | Matches | Points per match |
Nottingham Forest | 25 | 1.40 |
Everton | 83 | 1.23 |
Burnley | 425 | 1.34 |
Watford | 49 | 1.37 |
However, the Englishman isn’t exactly famed for his style of play. Upon Dyche being appointed Nottingham Forest manager last season, talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan said: “If he was sat in front of me, Sean would say, ‘I don’t play this way, I don’t play that way, I play with the resource that I’ve got, the good ball is the right ball,’ and all that sort of stuff.
“But we will see Forest be less progressive in my thinking – unless Sean will go into it thinking, ‘This is my first opportunity, I’ve got an owner that spends money like his pants are on fire, and buys players left, right and centre.”
As such, the ex-Forest boss may not be the most exciting of appointments, and a different English manager is now in the frame to replace Sage.
Crystal Palace eyeing move for Scott Parker
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace have held internal discussions regarding a move for a different former Burnley manager, namely Scott Parker, who has been out of work since leaving the Clarets back in April.
Parker, who prefers to use a 4-2-3-1 system, was unable to steer Burnley away from the relegation zone, and ultimately lost his job, but his Premier League experience means he remains an option for Palace, alongside the likes of Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Rob Edwards.
In fact, Dyche has praised the 46-year-old for the job he did at Turf Moor, saying: “Their model hasn’t worked, has it? Actually, that’s wrong because the model worked to get them up. But they spent a fortune and came straight back down. Then I assume they thought they were going to sell everyone for £100m but they didn’t, but then they went back up again after Scotty Parker did a brilliant job – an amazing job actually – and then they went down again.”
That said, with AFC Bournemouth and Fulham also parting ways with Parker, he has never really managed to prove himself over a sustained period in the top flight, and he would be a risky appointment for the Eagles.
