Naomi Girma made her return to the national team, while Lo’eau Labonta set a record as the oldest player to debut for the US during a 3-0 victory over China on Saturday. Katarina Macario, Sam Coffey, and Lindsey Heap each scored, with goalkeeper Paron Talis Jose earning her second shutout in just a few appearances.

Labonta, a 32-year-old midfielder for Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League, came off the bench in the second half. "When my name was called, I became the loudest cheerleader on the bench. It was incredible seeing the national team from that perspective," Labonta reflected post-match. "Then they said, ‘Lo, go!’ and I thought, ‘Where am I headed?’"

This match marked Girma’s first appearance for the national team this year. Despite dealing with a previous injury, the 24-year-old defender has recently helped Chelsea clinch the Women’s Super League title and the FA Cup. Earlier this year, Girma transferred to Chelsea for a record fee of $1.1 million.

"We missed her dearly," admitted US director Emma Hayes. "Her ability to manage the game and rebuild connections is invaluable. Having Naomi back is a great boost."

Talis scored in just her second match for the US. Macario netted her 11th international goal in the 28th minute, aided by Alyssa Thompson, who kept a play alive just in front of the goal. Coffey made it 2-0 in the 35th minute with a left-footed strike, while Heap capped the scoring with a header in the 54th minute.

"We feel tactically sharper than before," said Hayes. "We have more players, more control, and I’m pleased with how we performed."

The US team is currently facing some absences, including gold medalists from the previous Olympics, Sofia Wilson and Mallory Swanson, who are on maternity leave, alongside Trinity Rodman, who is managing ongoing back issues.

The match also rekindled memories of the US’s historic victory over China in the 1999 Women’s World Cup final. This year, the US faced China twice, winning both encounters. Overall, the Americans have a 39-9-13 record against China, with five consecutive wins.

The US recently lost 2-1 to Brazil on April 8, while China secured a 5-1 win against Thailand in their last match. The US will play Jamaica in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Editorial Opinion: This match marks a significant moment in US women’s soccer, showcasing the depth and resilience of the team as they adapt to roster changes. With key players returning, fans can be excited about the potential for continued success on the international stage.
