Steelers Eye Te Jone Smith as Key Asset in Trade Talks with Dolphins

The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring trade options to strengthen their offense, with veteran Miami Dolphins tight end John Nusmith emerging as a potential target, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This move would bring Nusmith back together with current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

At 29, Nusmith is having a standout year during his first season with the Dolphins. In his eighth NFL season, he has set career highs in receptions (88), receiving yards (884), and a success rate of 63.1%. He was Miami’s sole Pro Bowl representative last season.

Nusmith’s addition would complement the Steelers’ enhanced passing game, which already includes receiver DK Metcalf, free agent signing Robert Woods, and the possibility of acquiring quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Last season, the Steelers’ tight end recorded 65 catches and 7 touchdowns, while Donald Parham Jr. and undrafted free agent JJ Galbreth were also added to bolster the position. Galbreth tallied 93 receptions for 1,355 yards and 12 touchdowns in his college career.

Nusmith signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Dolphins in March 2024, but Schefter notes he is seeking a contract revision after his breakout season. He has not participated in OTAs amid negotiations and is projected to earn $4.6 million in 2025, though he prefers to remain with Miami.

Over three seasons in Arthur Smith’s offense, Nusmith tallied 126 receptions, 1,469 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Throughout his eight-year NFL career with the Titans, Patriots, Falcons, and Dolphins, Nusmith has amassed 307 catches for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Fan Take: This potential trade signals the Steelers’ commitment to building a dynamic and versatile offense capable of challenging the league’s best defenses. For NFL fans, adding a proven tight end like Nusmith could redefine tight end utilization and elevate the strategic complexity of the passing game.
