Just how massive is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when stacked up against other stadiums?

The NBA arenas can get incredibly loud, reflecting their size, with Chicago’s United Center—the largest NBA venue—holding nearly 21,000 spectators. In Major League Baseball, Dodger Stadium is the biggest, seating 56,000 fans, but that pales in comparison to the National Football League’s largest stadium, MetLife Stadium, which accommodates 82,500 fans and hosts the Jets and Giants.

Consider the massive crowds in these venues, yet none rank in the top 10 largest sports venues in the U.S. To be on that list, a stadium must hold six-figure crowds, which is mainly achieved by college football stadiums and racing venues.

Beaver Stadium, home to Pennsylvania’s Nittany Lions college football team, seats 106,572 fans. Eight college football stadiums hold over 100,000 fans, most built in the 1920s, except Beaver Stadium, which was constructed in 1960, incorporating parts of an older 30,000-seat stadium.

Michigan Stadium, with seating for 107,601, surpasses many others in size, exemplifying its rivalry with Ohio State. Texas Motor Speedway, hosting NASCAR and formerly IndyCar races until 2023, can hold 112,662 spectators. Las Vegas Motor Speedway, active since 1971 and hosting NASCAR for nearly 30 years, has a capacity of 116,000.

Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, hosts Formula 1, NASCAR, and MotoGP events, with a capacity of 117,439. Atlanta Motor Speedway, located near Hampton, Georgia, seats 125,000 and focuses on NASCAR events.

Michigan International Speedway, accommodating 137,243 fans, reflects Michigan’s love for large venues and hosts major NASCAR races. Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, with a 153,000 capacity, hosts NASCAR events and an MLB game in 2025 between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.

Churchill Downs, famous for the Kentucky Derby, has a seating capacity of 170,000, significantly larger than other horse race venues like Pimlico Race Course. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the Indianapolis 500, boasts a permanent seating of 250,000 and can hold up to 350,000 fans, making it the largest sports venue by far.

Fan Take: This highlights the monumental scale of NASCAR venues compared to traditional sports, showcasing the immense fan interest and community around racing. For NASCAR enthusiasts, it underscores the sport’s unparalleled ability to draw massive crowds, signaling a thriving future with tremendous event atmospheres that few other sports can match.
