Spire Motorsports has decided to suspend its leading driver, Carson Hocevar, for the final race of the 2026 season this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. This action follows Hocevar’s brake-check maneuver on Austin Cindric at Martinsville, which abruptly ended Cindric’s race. To fill Hocevar’s seat, Spire has enlisted Justin Haley from Kaulig Racing’s truck series, a driver who previously raced for Spire.
Although NASCAR initially did not penalize Hocevar immediately, they later imposed a $100,000 fine and deducted 25 driver points. In comparison, Josh Berry of Wood Brothers Racing received a $50,000 fine and the same points penalty for a brake check against Ryan Blaney. Hocevar’s harsher punishment was due to “multiple violations of the code of conduct,” and Spire’s suspension reflects ongoing concerns about his pattern of overly aggressive behavior on the track.
Jeff Dickerson, co-owner of Spire and a mentor figure to Hocevar, emphasized that the team’s decision went beyond monetary or points considerations and rested on respect and integrity. He acknowledged that while the suspension is tough, especially since the team supports Hocevar, his conduct at Martinsville did not align with the standards expected of drivers and team members.
Though Hocevar downplayed the incident as typical Martinsville racing and expressed that he “had fun,” the suspension marks the end of his season after finishing 21st in that race. On social media, Hocevar admitted his mistake, apologized to his team, sponsors, and fans, and promised to return in 2027 as an improved driver and teammate.
This move comes after public criticism of Spire’s previous tolerance of Hocevar’s actions, including comments from fellow driver Denny Hamlin, who questioned the team’s lack of disciplinary measures. Dickerson reiterated that racing at the Cup level demands professionalism and assured fans that Spire will compete united at Homestead while preparing for a strong championship bid next season.
Fan Take: This suspension highlights the increasing demand for accountability and professionalism in NASCAR’s top ranks, signaling to drivers that reckless behavior won’t be tolerated. For fans, it could mean cleaner, more respectful racing while setting a precedent that protects the sport’s integrity and competitiveness.
