Islam Makhachev’s recent withdrawal from negotiations for UFC 336 has stirred considerable debate. The Dagestani fighter was originally expected to defend his welterweight title against Carlos Prates on the January 30 event in Toronto. However, Makhachev stepped away, citing an overcrowded division and suggesting that Prates and Michael Morales should determine the top contender between themselves. This move was met with criticism from both Prates and UFC President Dana White. As a result, Prates and Morales are now scheduled to fight for the interim welterweight title in Canada.
Since the announcement, Prates has openly criticized Makhachev, warning that he intends to tarnish the champion’s legacy when they eventually meet. A heated social media exchange between Prates and Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz further escalated tensions. Prates shows no signs of backing down from the confrontation.
In a recent interview with Laerte Viana, Prates accused Makhachev of backing out of their planned title fight. He stated, “He talks about wanting to be an active champion, and even Hunter [Campbell] confirmed that date was set for him. Then suddenly, he refused to fight. He chickened out.” Though frustrated, Prates acknowledges that his immediate focus must be on defeating Morales to win the interim belt before turning his full attention to Makhachev. He added, “I was very angry, but what can I do? My priority now is to beat Morales and secure the interim title. After that, I’m going to come back and beat Makhachev twice as hard to teach him a lesson.”
Prates also expressed that Makhachev’s withdrawal delayed a dream he has pursued for 17 years. Clearly determined, the Brazilian fighter is ready to make Makhachev pay when they finally face off. “I’ve been training for 17 years to become a champion, and just when I get my chance, this guy pulls that kind of stunt. I was really mad. Now Morales will pay the price [laughs], and then I’m coming for him,” Prates concluded.
Makhachev recently extended his undefeated streak to 17 fights inside the Octagon after defeating Ian Garry at UFC 330. Meanwhile, Prates boasts a 7-1 UFC record and is on a three-fight finishing streak, including knockout wins over former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena.
With Makhachev potentially sidelined until mid-2027, fans might have a long wait to see the elite fighter back in action. Meanwhile, Prates has a prime opportunity to claim the interim title by overcoming Morales, positioning himself for a future showdown with Makhachev.
Fan Take: This controversy highlights the intense competition and shifting dynamics within the welterweight division, sparking excitement as new rivalries form. For fight fans, the drama around Makhachev and Prates not only promises a thrilling path to the championship but could also reshape the landscape of UFC’s top contenders.
