Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel has reportedly reached an agreement to join Real Madrid.
The 16-year-old has attracted attention from Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich, but Real are leading the race for his signature.
The news threatens to dampen the mood at Old Trafford following Tuesday night’s dramatic Champions League comeback against Roma, which provided a much-needed boost for Michael Carrick and his players.
United ended a nine-game winless run on Tuesday evening, coming from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 and provide Carrick with a significant boost.
Matheus Cunha was the hero for the Red Devils, scoring twice in the closing stages after Bruno Fernandes had pulled one back from the penalty spot.
The Brazilian completed the turnaround following an excellent pass from academy graduate Shea Lacey, although he was subsequently sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
Speaking to MUTV afterwards, Cunha was full of praise for Lacey, whose contribution highlighted the opportunities available to talented youngsters at Old Trafford.
“Shea is a young guy who has come through the Academy and we’ve seen the steps he’s taken.
“For him to get his first assist in the Champions League, I feel like being part of this is something incredible.”
Lacey is among a number of youngsters to have progressed into United’s senior squad in recent seasons, with the club’s academy continuing to provide opportunities at first-team level.

Real Madrid reach verbal agreement with Man Utd wonderkid JJ Gabriel
While Lacey continues to make progress towards establishing himself in United’s first team, another of the club’s brightest academy prospects could soon be heading elsewhere.
According to David Ornstein, Gabriel is ‘expected to sign’ for Real Madrid and has agreed terms in principle over a long-term contract at the Bernabeu.
Nothing has been signed at this stage, but the Spanish giants are pushing to complete a deal for the 16-year-old ahead of competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and reportedly have the biggest financial package on offer.
However, United could yet attempt to intervene, with Gabriel still registered to their academy until the end of the current campaign.
Sky Sports reveal JJ Gabriel legal action development
Speaking during a breaking news update on Wednesday, Sky Sports News shared an update on United’s attempts to retain Gabriel – or seek a larger compensation – through legal channels.
The broadcaster explained that the youngster’s eligibility for an EU passport through his parents grants Madrid a “loophole” to sign him in January, despite being registered with United’s academy until next summer.
United were reported in October to be considering legal action should Gabriel’s departure materialise, but Sky Sports News now report that the prospect of legal action is not a concern for Gabriel’s representatives.
The youngster’s camp remain confident about the possibility of completing a move, despite United’s willingness to challenge the situation.
It does not necessarily mean the club would be unsuccessful in any legal proceedings, but the update will do little to ease concerns at Old Trafford, where they face the prospect of losing one of their most talented players for next to nothing.
With Real Madrid pushing ahead and Gabriel’s representatives seemingly undeterred, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether the teenager remains in Manchester or if the Red Devils are awarded compensation for any eventual departure.
