Tom Thibodeau’s Role with the Knicks in Question After Final Loss to Pacers

Indianapolis – Shortly after the Nuggets dismissed general manager Calvin Booth and head coach Michael Malone, Tom Thibodeau found himself in a press conference at Madison Square Garden fielding questions about the high expectations involved in working alongside Malone, Booth, and the NBA.

“It might be a reflection of where we’re headed in the future. I hope there are people who can settle in. You win together and lose together. That’s an essential part of this business,” Thibodeau said.

Now, the Knicks face a pivotal question: should they maintain stability, make minor adjustments, and return next season with the same core group? Or should they take a different approach by trading star players or seeking a new head coach?

These questions will be addressed in the coming days as the Knicks conduct exit meetings with players and review the 2024-25 season.

Taking a broader view, it seems unusual to consider making significant changes to a team that reached the conference finals for the first time in 25 years.

The Knicks have demonstrated progress throughout most of the past year, especially during the Jalen Brunson era. There’s a strong argument to continue building around Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby, with Thibodeau as the coach.

After New York’s season-ending defeat on Saturday, Brunson showed clear support for both his teammates and coach Thibodeau.

He was emphatic when a reporter questioned if Thibodeau was the right coach to lead the team forward.

“Is that really the question now? Did you just ask if he’s the right person? Yes,” Brunson responded. After leaving the podium, he further challenged the premise of the question.

Brunson was also asked about his confidence in the current Knicks roster.

“Most confident. I’m confident. Seriously,” he said. “There’s not an ounce of doubt that this group lacks confidence.”

While it’s expected that Brunson would support his teammates and coach in this setting, the conviction in his answers reveals genuine belief.

The decision-makers in New York—mainly team president Leon Rose and owner James Dolan—will need to decide if they share the same outlook. The answer will likely emerge over the next six weeks.

What happens next? Like all teams, the Knicks will spend time evaluating players and coaches after their season-ending loss on Saturday. Though the assessment didn’t start immediately, sources close to the team say it will begin this week.

All NBA teams undergo similar evaluations after a season ends. At the Knicks, however, these assessments are guided by one clear standard: will this move bring the team closer to winning an NBA Championship?

Fan Take: This story highlights a critical crossroads for the Knicks, a team that has rekindled hopes after years of struggle. Basketball fans should watch closely because the decisions made now could redefine the landscape of the Eastern Conference and potentially reshape the future of a storied franchise.
