Carmelo Anthony and La La Anthony (formerly Vázquez) have reportedly finalized a settlement after nearly ten years of separation. Although the divorce details remain private, the New York County Supreme Court was set to approve the final judgment as of Wednesday, according to People magazine.
Once the judge signs off, the former NBA star and the ex-MTV VJ will officially be divorced. La La initially filed for divorce in 2021, citing irreconcilable differences, as first reported by TMZ on Wednesday.
Their relationship began in 2003 when mutual friend DJ Clue introduced them. The couple got engaged on Christmas Day 2004 and welcomed their son, Kiyan Anthony, in 2007. Kiyan, now 19, is currently a sophomore at Syracuse University, where he also plays college basketball.
They married in July 2010 in New York, with a guest list that included notable figures like LeBron James, Spike Lee, Serena Williams, Ciara, Kim Kardashian, and Ludacris, according to The Times. Rumors of their separation surfaced in April 2017, and by August that year, Carmelo had a daughter with his former partner Mia Burks.
Though the couple reunited briefly in late 2018, they ultimately ended their relationship in July 2019, as reported by People. La La had already been referring to their breakup as a divorce before it became official.
In a 2022 episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast, La La spoke candidly about the breakup and the challenges they faced co-parenting Kiyan. She expressed that the experience taught her her own strength, remarking, “You don’t know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.” La La also revealed that their marriage began to unravel around the time Carmelo was traded from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks in 2011.
At that time, she was uncertain about her future in love but more recently, during an October interview on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” she said she is “open” to dating, describing this as her “season of being open” to someone confident and adventurous.
On Carmelo’s side, rumors linked him to Racquel Smith, widow of former NFL player Will Smith, with the two reportedly seen together in June.
