Years Later, Ex-NBA Star Opens Up About Emotional Game 7 Defeat to LeBron James and the Cavaliers: ‘I Cried’

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers consistently overcame many top Eastern Conference teams during their playoff runs. A former NBA player recently shed light on this dominance.

Between 2015 and 2018, the Cavaliers, led by LeBron James, reached the NBA Finals for four straight years. While the Golden State Warriors thwarted LeBron in 2015 and dominated with Kevin Durant in 2017 and 2018 to claim three titles, Eastern Conference teams struggled to match Cleveland.

Teams like the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors repeatedly fell to LeBron and the Cavaliers. The Indiana Pacers, who currently compete in the NBA Finals, also suffered a tough loss to them. In 2018, the Pacers lost a grueling Game 7 to the Cavs in the first round, and their star player recently opened up about his feelings following that defeat.

Victor Oladipo, who led the Pacers after Paul George left and before Tyrese Halliburton emerged, was the team’s key figure during that 2018 showdown against LeBron. Despite a hard-fought series, Oladipo couldn’t get past Cleveland. Reflecting on the loss, he shared, “I cried so hard because when it’s over in the playoffs, that’s when you realize how tired you are. You don’t admit it to yourself, but that’s truly how I felt, especially in Game 7.”

This season, the Pacers defeated the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals with ease, winning the series 4-1. Oladipo, however, did not participate. The Pacers’ starguard excelled in the series, averaging 22.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6 assists over seven games, and was instrumental in pushing the Cavs to Game 7 with a standout triple-double performance of 28 points in Game 6.

It’s rare to hear NBA stars show such raw emotion, but Oladipo’s tears underline the intense struggle and heartbreak teams faced trying to surpass LeBron’s dominant Cavaliers during his second tenure with Cleveland.

Fan Take: This glimpse into the emotional toll on players like Victor Oladipo highlights how much LeBron’s era in Cleveland defined the Eastern Conference landscape. For basketball fans, it serves as a reminder of the fierce rivalries and the personal sacrifices behind the game’s biggest moments, adding deeper appreciation for the sport’s competitive spirit.
