Hughes, who broke his maiden on June 21 at Los Alamitos and remains undefeated at 5-for-5 following his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile win on October 30 at Keeneland, is among 50 entries for the Grade 2, $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity. His stablemate Miss Monica, victorious in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, leads the field of 35 nominees for the Grade 2, $200,000 Starlet Stakes.
Both races, set for two-year-olds at a distance of 1 1/16 miles, are scheduled during the upcoming Los Alamitos Winter Thoroughbred meet. The Starlet will be contested on December 5, followed by the Futurity a week later on December 12.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Hughes is owned by a large partnership. Baffert, who has dominated the Futurity with nine wins since it was relocated from Hollywood Park to Los Alamitos in 2014, also entered contenders Salahudin and Imperial Honor. Miss Monica, owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, is among Baffert’s 13 nominees to the Starlet, a race he has impressively won nine consecutive times from 2017 through 2025.
