Aaron Pico believes Jean Silva’s consistent activity and readiness should earn him a title shot. Silva (18-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC) is eager to challenge featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski (29-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC), who recently dominated Movsar Evloev at UFC 333. While Volkanovski and his coach seem to favor Aljamain Sterling as the next contender, Pico (15-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) holds a different view.
Volkanovski is also considering moving up to lightweight to face champion Justin Gaethje in what could be a double retirement bout. “Volk is in a position where he can pretty much do anything he wants,” Pico told MMA Junkie. “As Dana White said, it’s hard to say no to a guy like that. He’s fought everyone and moved between divisions. In my opinion, if anyone deserves a title shot against Volkanovski, it’s Jean Silva because he’s always ready and willing to fight anyone at any time.”
Pico added, “If Volk goes up in weight, a fight between him and Justin Gaethje would be incredible—two fighters I really respect. And the fact they might retire after that adds even more drama. I wish I had all the answers, but I don’t. What I do know is that I’m prepared to go out there and give my best performance.”
Pico is currently on his first winning streak in the UFC after scoring a first-round knockout over Losene Keita at UFC 333. “Facing Volkanovski would be a dream come true, especially winning the belt from him,” Pico said. “I hope Volk stays at featherweight so I can get that shot.”
