Marco Bezzecchi secured pole position in the Qatar qualifying session with two impressive laps, edging out championship leader Marc Marquez. Marquez must outperform Aprilia riders Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin to capture the 2026 title during Sunday’s race.
Although much focus has been on the 30-plus points Marquez needs to gain over Martin, who is sidelined due to injury and qualified a disappointing eleventh, it might actually be Bezzecchi who stands in the way of Marquez’s championship celebrations. To clinch the title, Marquez must finish at least eight points ahead of Bezzecchi—or seven points if the Ducati rider wins the Grand Prix—but Bezzecchi’s strong pace in practice and qualifying makes this a challenging prospect.
Completing the front row is Fabio Di Giannantonio, while Trackhouse teammates Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura flank Francesco Bagnaia in row two, sharing Aprilia and Ducati machinery. Row three features the highest-placed Honda rider, Johann Zarco, alongside Pedro Acosta on KTM and a returning Fermin Aldeguer. Jorge Martin begins the race in 13th position between KTM riders Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder on row four. HRC’s replacement rider, Jake Dixon, makes his MotoGP return lining up 17th, his first race in the class since 2021.
Yamaha will not participate in this weekend’s Qatar MotoGP due to company-wide travel restrictions, leaving an 18-rider grid. There are no current penalties impacting the race.
The Qatar Sprint race is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm local time (4:00 pm UK).
