AC Milan icon Alessandro Costacurta has cautioned his former team not to underestimate their upcoming Serie A clash with Genoa.
After a high after defeating rivals Inter, the mood in Ruben Amorim’s squad quickly shifted following a 2-0 loss to Ferencvaros in the Europa League.
Heading into Matchday 11, the Rossoneri have accumulated 21 points from 10 matches, trailing early leaders Lazio by seven points, and face another challenging game against Genoa.
Genoa, managed by Daniele De Rossi, has turned things around, winning four of their last five Serie A matches after starting the season with no wins from their first five (D1 L4).
Costacurta believes some Milan players got carried away after the win over Inter, leading to their Europa League defeat on Thursday.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he remarked: “Maintaining the same intensity against Inter would have been tough, but that’s what sets winning teams apart from others.”
“A few days after their 3-1 victory over Inter, some players seemed to think they had already made it big, which is a significant error.”
“Believing you’ve reached a certain level can be dangerous. It creates a mindset where you think success will come easily, and that’s a dangerous mistake.”
“For instance, [Yunus] Musah lost the ball within minutes, and [Amadou] Diawara gave away possession as well.”
“I’ve pointed out these three examples, but the issue was broader; it was evident they didn’t approach the match with the right mindset.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Genoa – Stephan El Shaarawy
El Shaarawy, who scored 21 goals in 83 appearances for Milan, has provided an assist in his last two Serie A matches. If he assists in the next game, he will become the second-oldest Genoa player to achieve assists in three consecutive Serie A matches since 2004-05, after Domenico Criscito in 2021.
AC Milan – Diego Moreira
Moreira has contributed to seven goals (four goals and three assists) in his first six Serie A matches for Milan. Since 2004-05, no player has matched his goal involvement in their first six games for the club, equal to Mario Balotelli’s record from 2013.
MATCH PREDICTION: AC MILAN WIN
Milan has remained unbeaten in their last ten Serie A encounters with Genoa (W6 D4). Since the 2020-21 season, they have only played more matches without a loss against Hellas Verona (12).
Additionally, Milan has triumphed in their last four away matches against Genoa. Only three teams have a longer streak of away wins against the Rossoneri: Verona (seven), Messina (five), and Pisa (five).
Under Amorim, Milan has netted 21 goals in their first ten Serie A games this season; the last manager to exceed this tally after their initial 11 league games was Cesare Maldini in 1972 with 25 goals.
Meanwhile, Genoa has secured wins in their last three Serie A matches, last doing so with four consecutive victories from March to April in 2009.
At home, Genoa has won three out of six Serie A games so far (D1 L2), as they aim to achieve four wins in their first seven home matches of a season for the first time since 2015-16 under Gian Piero Gasperini.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Genoa – 23.5%
Draw – 26.1%
AC Milan – 50.4%
Fan Take: This matchup is significant for both teams as AC Milan seeks to reclaim their form while Genoa aims to capitalize on their recent resurgence. A victory for Milan not only strengthens their position in the league but also underscores the importance of maintaining focus and humility in a competitive environment.
